  • Anecdote*: He was a fisherman when he enlisted at Yarmouth on 12 Jan 1943. His service number was F3481. He took basic training in Halifax and Aldersot, and on 14 May 1943 embarked with the 11th Independent Machine Gun Company, Princess Louise Fusiliers, Royal Canadian Infantry Corps. On 23 Oct 1943 he left England for the Mediterranean Theatre of War. On 29 Dec 1944 he was wounded and reported dangerously ill the next day. His parents then got word he was out of danger, and he sent them a letter saying he "was better and hoped to be home soon". Later medical reports showed he had acute hepatitis, a ruptured esophagus, pleurisy, and a shell would penetrating his right chest and abdomen. He was hospitalized at No. 1 Neuro Hospital in the United Kingdom. At 1730 hours on 26 Feb 1945 he was placed on the RCN Hospital Ship HMCS Niobe, where he died at 2200 hours that evening.1

  • Anecdote*: He enlisted in 1942 and received his wings on 14 Jun 1943. His service number was R153296, and he was a member of 53 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force. He was killed in action when his Liberator aircraft BZ945 did not return from a patrol over the Bay of Biscay. His attestation papers show the aircraft with a crew of 11 took off at 2152 hrs on 16 Apr 1944 to carry out a Leigh Light Anti-submarine Patrol over the Atlantic. A signal was received on 17 Apr 1944 that a possible U-Boat was being investigated. Nothing further was received. The official report believed their failure to return was due to enemy action.1
