He was a Captain in the 3rd Regiment of Footguards and was at the battle of Almanza under the Duke of Argyle. He was appointed fort-major and Deputy Governor of New York, and there acquired a large plantation and assumed the title of Baronet as the male heir of his great-grandfather.1

He lent 100,000 merks to the Earl of Morton, for which he got security upon the Orkneys, then deemed sufficient; but on the reduction of Morton's right in Charles II's time, the security was entirely set aside so that both principal and interst were lost.1

  • Anecdote*: He was bred a merchant, and went abroad in 1739, living for a time in Holland. In 1754 he was appointed by George II as British consul in Tuscany, and office later confirmed to him by George III, by whom he was knighted. He later became head auditor and comptroller of the army accounts at London. The male line of the four elder brothers of Sir William having failed, he became undouted heir male of Sir William Dick of Braid, his great-great-grandfather. On 14 Mar 1768 he was served heir to the title of Baronet before a jury at Edinburgh. The title had been dormant since the deathof Sir William Dick of Braid who died in 1733 (great-grandson of the first Sir William). John's nearest relations and heirs at law were the Prestonfield family, but in his dotage he was induced to leave nearly the whole of his large family to strangers.1
