Ephraim Atkinson1

M, b. 9 May 1857
Ephraim Atkinson|b. 9 May 1857|p273.htm#i8286|Israel Smith Atkinson|b. 1 Aug 1817\nd. 9 Feb 1875|p273.htm#i8283|Patience Brown|b. 15 Apr 1818\nd. 23 Jan 1889|p273.htm#i8284|William Atkinson|b. a 2 Jan 1788\nd. 1 Jan 1872|p272.htm#i8279|Abigail Smith|b. 18 May 1792|p272.htm#i8280|Robert Brown||p825.htm#i25172|Eunice Doty||p825.htm#i25173|
  • Anecdote*: He was slight and of small stature. He and his wife lived first at Newellton, then moved to Clark's Harbour where he built houses, some of which still exist. Sometimes he left home at 5AM to walk to Stoney Island to build, then walked home again at night. But there was only about one house a year built, so he sought odd repair jobs. Then he started building dories behind his home to supplement his winter income. He bought Charlie Kenney's boat shop on the Clark's Harbour waterfront near the Kenney wharf and built flat bottomed dories powered by sail, 20 to 22 feet long, with a pointed stern (square sterned dories were not yet used). His first gas powered boat was for a man from NB who provided his own blueprints. It was a pleasure craft not suited for fishing, but it gave him ideas. He designed a new fishing boat about 24 feet long, narrow in comparison with today's model. He eliminated the false keep used to haul up pleasure craft and built a well to allow water to drain away from the motor. A skig (cut away area) above the stern end of the keel held the "blade" (propellor). It had a sharp stem and was nearly flat toward the stern. It was fitted with a canvas spray hood which later was changed to the familiar wooden "cud" seen today. Because it was low in the sides it was good for boarding lobster traps, yet was versatile enough for fishing. His boat was so popular that he had to build a second adjoining shop to meet deand. The basic boat has remain unchanged, though now they have water-tight decking, modern hauling equipment, and higher sides. They are now about 50 feet long, but proportinally wider. A 43 foot boat can carry 230 traps 20 miles to the grounds at Seal Island and beyond. Ephraim retired at the age of 80, in 1938, leaving his sons to continue the business.3
  • Anecdote: The 1901 census shows him as head of household 71 family 79 in Clark's Harbour, a carpenter, of English ancestry, and a Free Baptist. The census also shows Hattie A. Trott, b. 27 Feb 1836, of English ancestry, and a Free Baptist, living with the family as a domestic.4
  • Occupation*: Ephraim Atkinson was employed as a very widely known designer and builder of Cape Island boats which, with modifications, are still being produced by several of his descendants [1988]. He was originally a house builder, having apprenticed in that trade from age 16 to 18 or 19.1,3
  • Birth*: He was born on 9 May 1857 at NS.5
  • He was the son of Israel Smith Atkinson and Patience Brown.1,2
  • Birth-Var: Alternatively, Ephraim Atkinson was born on 13 May 1858 at Cape Negro area, CSI, NS.3,2
  • Marriage*: He married Jessie R. MacKinnon in 1883.
