  • Freebert Atkinson is the son of Herbert A. Atkinson.1
  • Anecdote*: He joined his father boat building at age 15. He and his brother Bruce (#8617) formed a partnership, but in the early 1970s Bruce built a new shop and they went into business separately. In 1977 he constructed his own fibreglass molds and began his own fibreglassing industry. He concentrated on hulls, while his brother Herbert Jr. (#8619) and others finished the boats. By 1979 he had 3 shops, 2 for molding and one for Herbert Jr. to do finishing. 9 Apr 1979 there was a fire that started in the furnace room, and all 3 shops burnt to the ground. His molds were lost, but a hull had been launched before the fire, so he re-made his molds from it and was back in business in a month.1
