  • Name Variation: John Osborn Smith was also known as John Osborne Smith.1,3
  • Anecdote: He was one of the first settlers at The Hawk, but had been living there only four months when he drowned. The spot near where he capsized is known as Johnnie's Rock. Mrs. Grace Gardiner's (#8214) keepsakes included a note to the effect that John built the first house on the Hawk, and that the second home was built by his cousin Thomas (#8195), who later drowned. Source 20 has them built in the other order (p. 44). John's house was close to the site of the recently [1988] built New Testament Baptist Church. One source gives him 9 children with wife Elizabeth, and since birth entry for Betsy Osborn Smith was crossed out, it is possible that she was not their daughter.4,5,6,7

  • Death*: He died on 16 August 1823 at age 46; drowned at sea when his boat capsized on Johnnie's Rock near Cape Sable. Two others with him were saved, one his son Cunningham Smith (#8143), and the other Stephen Smith (probably his brother, #8144).9,5,1,10

  • Name Variation: Warren *Anson* Kendrick was also known as Ansel Kenderick.3
  • Anecdote*: He is mentioned in his grandmother's (Deborah Tucker) will as using the name Anson. He was about 10 when his father died. Early in life he was a carpenter. Between 1765 and 1770 he moved to Sherose Island, NS and eventually settled at Shag Harbour, on Kendrick's Island (Prospect Island). He spent his time there fishing, farming, and on other business. He was a soldier at the taking of Louisburg, unhurt throughout the fighting. His family had slaves when living at Cape Cod, MA. With his youngest daughter Abigail, her husband Mr Bradford, and their 2 children, he was going from an island to Shag Harbour in a boat when it capsized in a heavy sea on a bar, throwing all aboard into the water. Mr Bradford and the 2 children immediately drowned. Anson started to swim to shore, then returned to help his daughter, and in so doing, drowned. The daughter clung to the upturned boat and eventually reached shore. The Return of 1769 shows his name as Kenwick, and on a 1770 deed he signed Kincoruk.4,1,2

Archibald Wilson

M, d. circa 1834
  • Anecdote*: A few miles from Edinburgh, Scotland, in Leith (on the Firth of Forth) he learned his trade of block-making, pump-making, and the making of spars and yards for ships. It was also there that he met his wife, and they lived there for a few years after marrying. He and Christiana are supposed to have emigrated to Boston MA in 1805, then moved to Halifax NS during the War of 1812. There he worked in the repairing and refitting of the SHANNON and the CHESAPEAKE after their famous battle, the CHESAPEAKE being prepared for service in the Royal Navy. At the time in Halifax a wealthy Scottish woman, Mrs Jenny Andrews, was recruiting families to settle at Wood's Harbour. They joined the group and settled in Woods Harbour, in the part now called Forbes Point. It wasn't a very good move, since a few small vessels were being built in Pubnico and Barrington, but none in Woods Harbour. However, he got some work making supplies for the vessels being built along the coast, and the family managed. The situation improved when a brig was to be built in Pubnico, and he got the contract to build the blocks and other supplies. He and his son William (about 20) worked all winter and in the spring loaded the boat with the help of his son-in-law, Eleazar Nickerson, and headed for Pubnico. A sudden squall near Pubnico Beach capsized the boat, and although Eleazar reached shore, Archibald and William were drowned (around 1834).1

At the urging of Rev Asa McGray, she later moved to Cape Sable Island to teach school. She taught first at North East Point and then at Stoney Island. At Stoney Island the people built a little log house for her to use as living quarters and for teaching. The house was later occupied by Joseph Trott. From there she moved to Newellton, where a similar house was built. She was the first woman to teach in the area. She later tutored children at Barrington Passage, and taught manners. • Anecdote*: She arrived from Palatinate in 1751 on MURDOCH. She appears on the Aug to Oct 1752 Halifax Victualling List (No 4). Bell (Source 29) makes reference to the Dec 1752 to Feb 1753 Halifax Compassionate Victualling List as showing "John [Johanna] Judith Seelig" marked "DD-28", which indicates died during that victualling period. This does not match other information, and probably refers to her sister Johanna Elizabeth Margaret Seelig (#8052) who does not appear in lists after this date. She appears on the Jun 1755 Lunenburg Victualling List, and again on the Feb to May 1756 and Jan to May 1757 lists.4
