She was in her 93rd year. Mrs Walters was born in Vogler's Cove, Nova Scotia, on August 10th, 1849, daughter of the late J Henry Selig and Mary Ann (Tanner) Selig of Vogler's Cove. She and her husband, after leaving Lunenburg, moved to Amesbury, Mass, and for the past five and one- half years resided in Milton, Mass. She was a member of the Lunenburg Methodist Church. Five generations are represented in the list of survivors, including seven daughters, Mrs Minnie Greek, Mrs Lois Crook, Mrs Hattie Parker, Mrs Chester Plummer, Mrs Dudleu Curier, Mrs Lillian Curier, Mrs Ruth Potter; a son Mr William Walters; two sisters Mrs Margaret Clattenburg, Mrs Hester Mann; two brothers Mr Thomas and Henry Selig; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-six great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. Services were held Monday afternoon, March 30th, at the Pillsbury and Gale Funeral Parlors, Amesbury, Mass. Burial was in Bartlett Cemetery of that town." His wife predeceased him in 1932 and two sons, Lauriel and Alvin were lost at sea some years ago. Also surviving him are two sisters, Mrs. George Clattenburg, Port Medway; Mrs. Joseph Mann, Vogler's Cove; and one brother, Thomas Selig of Port Medway. Rev.W.R. Harris conducted the funeral service from the Anglican Church on Thursday afternoon. Interment was in the Anglican Cemetery. (written on obit - Unknown Newspaper and date)."4

  • Anecdote*: Family tradition has him beating his wife and children. His gravestone says he was born in 1855. His obituary read: "The death occurred on the second of Mr George Selig, aged 76. He had been ill for some months. His wife passed away in June. He lived here most of his life, moving from South West Cove to the Wylde property a few years ago. He was a hard working man and as long as possible kept at his daily duties. He is survived by a family of five sons and three daughters. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev Mr Stone on Friday afternoon; interment in the Anglican cemetery." (Liverpool Advance of Wed, Aug 9 1933, pg 5, col 4). The 1901 census shows him in Port Medway NS, in dwelling 111 family 116, head of household, 46 years old, married, of German descent, Church of England, employed as a fisherman.1,2,3
