The 1901 census shows him as a fisherman aged 47, living with wife Maria, Edward aged 22, Wallice aged 18, Elijah aged 6, James H aged 4, Sarah E aged 1, and Henry Blades aged 9. When his son James died he wrote the poem, "On a lonely island far out at sea,
There resides a family of ten.
There were 3 little boys, and 3 little girls, and
2 others had grown to be men.
They would play on the sand when the tide was out,
And return when the tide would come in.
At last death came to the door one day,
And stayed there for poor little Jim.
How grieved we were when we heard the sad news,
That poor little Jimmy must die.
But we know that the angels would take him away
up above the dark clouds in the sky.
We looked on his form as he laid on the cot
Oh, how the children did cry.
His eyes grew dim as his breath grew faint,
As he closed them at last with a sigh.
The day came at last, and the sun shone clear
Over the hills where the birds build their nest,
but his spirit had gone with the angels of love,
It had gone to the home of the blest.
They took him away o'er the troubled sea.
The sea that is so far and wide.
But we gazed on the place where his form
once lay, the place where poor Jimmie died.
We long for our Jimmie, we miss him and sign
but he's gone to a better land.
He's happy and free no more shall we see
His little foot prints in the sand."
The 1901 census shows him in Clark's Harbour Household 267, with wife Mariah and children Eliga, James, Sarah, Henrey, Edward, and Wallace, head of household, aged 47, born 5 Jun 1853.1,2
